BIOGRAPHY

My background in public health lies mainly in working in the fields of maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse and youth. Most of my professional experience has been with the Department of Public Health in San Francisco managing and/or taking part in various programs such as an HIV prevention program for youth, the Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC), and child passenger safety issues. I also have experience working with various non-profit organizations in the Bay Area focusing on the health of minority populations in the areas of HIV/AIDS, food security, breast cancer, breastfeeding, diabetes, and child passenger safety.

My teaching experience began as a part-time instructor for the Health Education Department at City College of San Francisco almost nine years ago. In Fall 2008, I was awarded a tenure track position at City College and have taught full-time since then. Classes that I have taught include: Health 53 (Health Science- 3 units), Health 33 (Health Science- 2 units), Health 25 (Women's Health Issues), Health 11E (Child Passenger Safety), and Health 7 (Introduction to Health Professions).

I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and my Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles. My teaching philosophy incorporates these two disciplines into understanding how communities adopt certain health behaviors and awakening communities to social injustices around them. My goal is to challenge students to think about health in a new light and how they can make a difference in the health of their own communities, as well as their personal lives.
