Linda Bacon

Biography

My goal is to help students understand the science of nutrition, why they make particular food choices, and the consequences of these food choices. I focus on sustainability, with attention to both personal and planetary health. My courses are intended to empower students to consciously define their values and to make satisfying nutritional choices that support these values. I am committed to helping people of all sizes regain a pleasurable relationship with food and their bodies.

I received my PhD in physiology from the University of California, Davis, with a speciality in nutrition and weight regulation.  I also hold two Masters Degrees, one in Exercise Science and the other in Psychotherapy. I have been teaching at CCSF since 2001.

In addition to my teaching, I also conduct research at University of California. Davis.  You can view my faculty website by following this link.

My research focuses on supporting people in appreciating their bodies and adopting healthy habits, including a heightened awareness of and response to body signals (in contrast to weight-control dieting).  You can read an article I published about my research in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, called Size Acceptance and Intuitive Eating Improve Health for Obese Female Chronic Dieters, by following this link.

I have also written a book which provides more information on this topic: Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight.

You can also check out my advice to physicians, published on Medscape, entitled End the War on Obesity: Make Peace with your Patients. You will need to register and log in to view the file.  (Registration is free.)

Or check out this op ed I wrote for th LA Times, called Cutting the Obesity Epidemic Down To Size.

You can find additional information about my work by visiting my website (www.LindaBacon.Org).
