| Course Description: | Digital Media Skills is an entry level class that prepares students for digital editing classes such as Final Cut Pro, Avid, After Effects, Pro Tools and Photoshop. The course covers topics that a common skills needed across all the digital media arts. Digital Media Skills serves as a fundamentals and skills building core course for understanding digital media technology. We will cover many aspects of issues in the digital media realms of bandwidth, compression, cross-platform file formats, media storage and basic digital media skills. |

| Textbook: | None required, readings will be online. For a hard copy version of the content, you may purchase a BCST 119 Digital Media Skills reader - available through the CCSF bookstore. This will give you convenient access to the course content at anytime - even after the online course has ended. It is not required that you purchase this reader if you are taking this course online. |
| Class Participation: | You will be expected to participate in all the class assignments, including posting messages on course discussion forums. Your participation will be a factor in your final grade. |
| Grading: | Between 10 and 15 Assignments (70%) Midterm Exam (10%) - avail. during week 9 only Final Exam (20%) - avail. during finals week only Assignments will be given most weeks of the semester. Each Assignment will have a specific deadline you must meet. In general, you will receive a grade and comments for each on-time homework assignment within one week. There is a final project in this course, and it is just considered to be another weekly assignment (included in the overall 70% of your grade). Your weekly homework assignments all lead up to your final project, so hopefully the final project will be mostly finished by Week 16, so that the last week you'll just add the final touches to it. Weekly Assignments are the heart of this course. In order to successfully complete this course you will need to stay up-to-date with the homework. |
| Course Content: | The semester will progress approximately as follows:
Week 1 : Course Overview Weeks 2-4 : Understanding Computers including Hardware, Software, Peripherals and Connectivity Weeks 5-7 : Understanding Graphics (you'll create graphics using Photoshop Elements) Weeks 8-12 : Understanding Audio (you'll be able to record your own voice (hardware permitting) and edit audio files) Weeks 13-15 : Understanding Video (you can use your own camera, or use footage provided to complete basic video edits) Week 16 : A brief overview of multimedia (or how to bring everything together for your final project) Week 17 : Your final project (samples will be included throughout the semester so you'll get some ideas) |
| Enrollment: | The online registration system has a built-in waiting list feature. This has been turned on for this class. Each section has a maximum waiting list of 10 students. If you are on the waiting list and a spot opens before the semester begins, you will be notified automatically, (at the email address you include with your registration info) and invited to join the class. If there are students on the waiting list after the first day of class, I will try clear up my roster and make room if possible. I will contact you via email if there space opens.
If you would like to drop this course at any time during the semester it is the student's responsibility to do so. If you do not officially drop the course, you may receive a failing grade on your academic record. |
