Install Internet Information Services (IIS), Version 5.1, For XP. by Glenn
Knapp |
IIS is a collection of programs. You can use
the program to set up a personal web server,
and share files and folders via the web. Further, you
are able to access databases, and create an intranet.
Please install the Internet Information Services (IIS) for
Windows 2000 Professional or XP Professional before you install
the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions. Also you must install and run
the Indexing Services to return Search Engine Results.
- Click the Control Panel.
- Click the Add/Remove Programs.
- Click IIS.
- Click the Indexing Services.
- If you receive the error while running a search engine, "...the service is not running...," do the following.
- Click the Control Panel.
- Click Administrative Tools.
- Click services.
- Click Indexing Services.
- Press the General Tab.
- Click Automatic in the Start Up type list box.
- Click the Service Status Start Tab.
- Advice: If you want to use the advanced features of windows, you must use the NTFS file system.
NTFS is a way to format a hard disk and use intensive encryption. NTFS also allows massive file compression beyond the FAT 32 bit file system. (Fat 16 bit file system was originally used with Windows 95.) The NTFS file system stores data in an orderly manner rather than scattering the data around the hard disk surface, as the FAT file system has done. This allows a hard disk to spin faster, and to defragment the hard disk more efficiently. Further, NTFS file sytem allows a large file size (as large as the hard drive). The FAT 32 bit system can store no more than 2 gigabytes of data. This new file system (NTFS) supports indexing which allows faster processing of data, and more effective searching/processing with created-search engines.
The only reason to use the FAT or FAT 32 file system is for dual booting. Also, if you intend to promote a server to a contoller, the format must be the NTFS file system. Many other features may be offered by the NTFS file system.
- NOTE: Please use the following command, in the command prompt*** convert c: /FS:NTFS /V ***
IIS is not installed by default. However, you may do a
custom XP installation, and then you can install
IIS. You may install IIS at any time. Follow the
sequence of steps to install the IIS package.
- CLICK Start.
- CLICK Settings.
- CLICK Control Panel.
- CLICK Add/Remove Program Link.
- CLICK Add/Remove Window Components. This will start
the Windows Component Wizard.
- In the Components list, CLICK the Internet Information
Service (IIS) check box.
- CLICK next to install all of the IIS services.
- CHECK the Indexing Services. Make sure the Indexing Services is installed.
- CLICK Finish when the Wizard finishes installing the services.
Thanks, and good luck.
