3. A bilingual dictionary
Tips on purchasing a bilingual dictionary. Check that the dictionary provides the various meanings of an entry and that examples are included to place the word in its context. Phrases, idiomatic expressions and proverbs should also be listed under the entry. For example, look up take , get or other common words with multiple meanings to make sure that each word is analyzed in all its meanings. Generally, phrases, idiomatic expressions and proverbs are listed under the entry of the most important word contained in the phrase. Thus, for example, give him an inch and he will take a mile should be found under inch . Some reliable publishers are Zingarelli, Collins and Garzanti.
Grading policy
Midterm and final grades will be based on the quality of class participation, including performance in class, quizzes and homework, acquired competence and the final exam. This course can be taken on a credit/no credit basis.
Attendance:
Students are required to attend all scheduled class meetings. Excessive absence will adversely affect your progress in the course and, ultimately, your final grade. Over seven (7) hours of absence (three class sessions) will be considered excessive and will result in your final grade being lowered by ten percent (one grade). Please note that if you decide not to continue in the class, you need to file a Drop Form in person in the Office of Admissions and Records by the deadline, to avoid a final grade of "W" or "F" on your permanent record.
Homework assignments:
For your individual progress and for the sake of the functioning of the class as a whole, practice each lesson assigned at home thoroughly. Read assigned sections over carefully before they are presented in class. Read dialogues, vocabulary words and exercises aloud. Practice with the cassette tapes and the CD-ROM. Set aside at least seven hours per week for practice and study at a specific time daily.
Testing:
There will be quizzes and various informal exams given during the course of the summer session. The midterm and comprehensive final exam must be taken at the scheduled time and place.
