City College of San Francisco ESL 130, Intermediate Academic ESL Downtown Campus CRN 78265 Fall, 2009 Instructor: Margaret Benshoof-Holler In this course, students will practice writing short expository essays and reports, paragraphs, and sentences for academic papers for college courses. Students will work to improve reading, vocabulary, grammar skills, and writing. Students must be able to donate blocks of time to the writing process to improve their writing. Writing: Assigned papers are to be turned in on time. Late papers will lose points. Out-of-Class papers and rewrites of both in-class and out-of-class papers are to be typed double-spaced and turned in in the proper format. Rewriting: Rewriting is an important tool in learning. When you rewrite a paper, you follow the teacher’s suggestions and corrections to make changes to the paper that you have written to improve it. And, both In Class and Out of Class Papers can and should be rewritten one or more times. This will help you improve your writing and bring up your grades. Final grades for each paper, except for the final, will be an average of the original paper plus each rewrite. Homework: In addition to writing short papers, homework will include reading, grammar and writing structure exercises. All homework assignments must be done and turned in on time. Not to turn in homework will take away points from final grade. Attendance: Students must attend class. Only three absences are allowed. Office Hours: Instructor’s office in Room 613, Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. Online Information: The instructor's website address is http://fog.ccsf.edu/~mbenshoo.
