Developing Web Sites with Expression Web

ONLINE CLASS

Spring 2010 Online Students

Registered students must log in to the course between Tuesday, January 19 and Thursday, January 21.
How to log in to the course

Please buy your class materials before the class begins.

Students who do not log in and complete assignments on schedule may be dropped.

*FYI, there are no campus meetings for this class.

If you have good word processing and file management skills, go from zero knowledge to a working website in one class! Expression Web is Microsoft's new web design program that makes it easier than ever to get professional results. Your instructor concentrates on the features that make the design process easy. (See the college catalog description.)

You can view some of the best student sites from previous semesters:

Creole and Cajun Cuisine
     by Sandra Mance
Planet Infinity by Aicha Kerrar
Bay Area Best  by Nick Chinn
Rehoboth Beach by David Sammons
Travel Log  by Laura Chapman
Soko Gakuen Language School by Ray Geronimo

This class earns college credit. The state requires that assignments be completed each week, so please schedule at least 3 two-hour sessions a week. This NOT a self-paced class (though you can "work ahead" in most cases.)

Tuition is $78 for this three-unit course (California residents). You also need to buy a textbook (about $25) and, if you want to work at home, Expression Web. Expression Web is not available for Macintosh computers.  Please see the Class Materials for different options for obtaining Expression Web. If you do not want to work at home, you can work in the Business Computing lab, open 6 days a week. See the hours and location and parking information.

Tips for online students

  • This class is suitable for students who have not had experience designing web pages, but do have other computer skills. On a website, each page and picture is a separate file. You need to have good skills in copying, moving, and renaming files. You also need to understand the storage structure of a hard drive, and how to navigate from folder to folder. In addition, you need to have word processing skills and experience navigating the Internet.

  • Keep up with the class. The biggest problem online students have is gradually falling behind.

  • Schedule at least 9 hours per week to focus on the class. Remember, in a regular class you would be driving, parking, attending class, and doing homework. Don't think that that you don't need to make time for class just because you're not on campus.

  • Contact your instructor as soon as you begin to have problems or if you decide to drop the class.

Special Needs

This course focuses on graphical Web design and requires students to create Web pages with multiple column layouts, images and other graphics elements. Students who need academic accommodations should request them from the Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) located in the Rosenberg Library, Room 323 on the Ocean Campus. Telephone: 415-452-5481 (V) 415-452-5451 (TTY). DSPS is the campus office responsible for verifying disability-related need for academic accommodations, assessing that need, and for planning accommodations in cooperation with students and instructors as needed and consistent with course requirements.
