What you are required
to do in CS 101 each week
Important Homework information:
- Start every week by reading the Insight class homepage and the week's
task list and online book.
-
You must log in to the class at least once a week, but I recommend
at least 3 times a week.
When is homework due? You can find the due date in
the Schedule, or in the top section of the Insight class. Here's an example:
Week 1: January 17 - 27,
2010
(The due date is the last day of the week)
Note that each week has its own section, and its date will
show the last day of the week as Thursday. However, homework is due the
next day, Friday at 11:55pm PST. Usually there is a 2 day grace period and
homework can be turned in through Sunday night, and if there's a holiday, that
due date will be at the top of the class home page. The final exam may
not be taken late and there is no grace period.
Read and print
the task list for the week: A detailed description of weekly homework
assignments can be found
on the weekly task list in the section for each week. Scroll down
below the top section in insight to find the week's section, or use the
links at the top right of the Insight screen.
Every week
you are required to read the online Course Content book. It contains a
summary of the week's material, links to online tutorials, and other useful
information.
Turning in assignments: If there's something to turn in
(true in some but not all weeks) use the upload assignment tool in the
week's section.
Participation: You are expected to read all the Forum
postings and check your Insight email every week. Pay particular
attention to "Instructor Messages" because I leave important
announcements there. You also need to be present in our online "classroom"
by posting to a forum at least 3 times a month.
Participation is a percentage of your grade.
Textbook Readings: If a chapter is
assigned for the week, after reading the online Course content book, carefully read the chapter in the
book. All tests and quizzes are based on the textbook.
Chapter Quizzes: Every week we cover a textbook chapter,
there is a chapter quiz. All chapter quizzes are open book, but timed, so
you don't have time to look up all the answers. Be sure to study for
them! You can take each chapter's quiz 3 times only, and
the highest score counts towards your grade. (There is also a practice
quiz, but its score doesn't count. This is to help you prepare for the
chapter quiz.)
- Due Dates: All assignments need to be turned
in by 11:55 pm PST on the end date for the week, Friday night. Chapter
quizzes and homework upload assignments have a 2 day grace period,
the Sunday following the due date. After that, late assignments
can be turned in using email up to one week following the due date, but will receive a 10%
drop in points (one grade). Midterm and Final exams may not be taken late.
Contact the instructor if you have a problem with a due date!
