What you are required to do each week
Important Homework information:
- Start every week by reading the Insight class homepage and the week's
task list and online book.
-
You must log in to the class at least once a week, but I recommend
at least 3 times a week.
-
You must check your official CCSF student email account at least once a week.
You will receive important announcements there.
When is homework due? You can find the due date in
the Schedule, or in the top section of the Insight class. Here's an example:
Week 1: January 17 - 27,
2010
(The due date is the last day of the week)
Note that each week has its own section, and its date will
show the last day of the week as Thursday. However, homework is due the
next day, Friday at 11:55pm PST. Usually there is a 2 day grace period and
homework can be turned in through Sunday night, and if there's a holiday, that
due date will be at the top of the class home page. The final exam may
not be taken late and there is no grace period.
- Weekly Tasks: Every week you'll find a detailed description
of what to do in the week's task list - in Insight, scroll down to find
the section for the current week. It will contain links to everything you
need for the week. Also read the top section, which
is also called the class home page. It changes every week.
Read and print
the task list for the week: A detailed description of weekly homework
assignments can be found
on the weekly task list in the section for each week. Scroll down
below the top section in insight to find the week's section, or use the
links at the top right of the Insight screen.
Every week
you are required to read the online Course Content book. It contains a
summary of the week's material, links to online tutorials, and other useful
information.
Turning in assignments: If there's something to turn in
(true in most weeks) use the upload assignment tool in the
week's section. The assignments are also under "Assignments" in the
Activities block.
Important: Check your official
CCSF student email (@mail.ccsf.edu) every week. There is a link on the Insight
login page to your student email account, also at www.ccsf.edu. You'll be receiving important messages from the
school and your instructor there.
-
Participation: You are expected to read all the Forum
postings every week. Pay particular
attention to "Instructor Messages" because I leave important
announcements there. You also need to be present in our online "classroom"
by posting to a forum at least 3 times a month.
Participation is a percentage of your grade.
-
Textbook Tutorials: Each chapter in
the book is a tutorial which you will read and follow along at your
computer. You need to do all the hands-on exercises
in the tutorial or you won't get the right answers in the homework - don't
skip anything unless instructed in the week's task list. You will
learn by doing in this class - you can only learn the commands if you
practice. You will also need student data disks to follow the
tutorials (download the .zip
files from the class's top section; uncompress them onto USB flash drives or
floppy diskettes.)
- Textbook Appendix: Since our book was originally
written for Windows 2000, the XP commands, information or syntax that are different are in the
appendix. Be sure to look at the appendix for each tutorial.
-
Tutorial Quizzes: Every week we cover a textbook chapter,
there is a tutorial quiz. All tutorial quizzes are open book, but timed, so
you don't have time to look up all the answers. Be sure to study for
them! You can take each tutorial's quiz 3 times only, and
the highest score counts towards your grade. (There is also a practice
quiz, but its score doesn't count. This is to help you prepare for the
tutorial quiz.)
