|
| Course Title | Operating Systems II: Windows XP and 2000 Command Line |
| Course Number | CNIT 102 |
| Semester Units | 3 |
| Prerequisites | There are no prerequisites to the course, though it is advised that you have taken CNIT 101 or have a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows GUI. |
| Course Description | This is an advanced course covering the use of the command line interface provided with Microsoft Windows. It is especially for students planning to take a CNIT certificate in Computer Support or to prepare for the COMPTIA A+ examination, or for advanced Windows users who wish to troubleshoot computer problems. This class studies fundamental computer command syntax with an in-depth study of Command Line Interface and Disk Operating System (DOS) commands, batch file programming, environmental configuration and the Recovery Console. Students will need to use a computer system to execute problem solving exercises using commands, preferably with either Windows XP or Windows 2000. You can use Windows Vista or 7, but it will not match the textbook exactly. |

| Textbook | Phillips, Skagerberg
Microsoft windows 2000 MS-DOS Command Line Comprehensive Enhanced,
2nd Edition,
Course Technology. isbn-13: 9780619185510 You can purchase the book at the CCSF bookstore on the Phelan campus. |
| Required Materials | 6 or more high density 3.5" floppy diskettes OR , if you don't have a floppy drive, 3 USB flash drives, 10MB or larger. |
| Operating System | Your homework computer would preferably have Windows XP or Windows 2000, but noting that the book won't always match what you see, Windows Vista or 7 may be used. |
| Computer Access |
To take an online class you need access to a computer with Internet connection. Make a plan for emergencies, such as if your computer is broken or Internet connection is down. Public libraries, campus labs, a friend's computer - think about what you'd do. |
| Drop Policy | Instructor reserves the right to drop students who do not attend class (do not log in or participate in forums and assignments for 2 weeks). While students may be dropped by the instructor, it is the student's responsibility to drop the class in order to avoid an "F". Be aware of the final drop date listed in the CCSF calendar. |
| Class Participation | You will be expected to participate in all the class assignments, including reading messages in the forums on a weekly basis, reading all the online content books, and responding to or creating forum postings. Your participation will be a factor in your final grade. I expect each student to start a thread or reply to another student's post in substantial fashion at least 3 times a month. Plan to log in to the class several times a week. |
| Homework Assignments | Homework assignments will be given most weeks of the semester. Keep track of what's assigned in the schedule or the week's task list. Each assignment will have a specific deadline you must meet. You will receive a grade for each homework assignment within one week. Homework could include a file to upload, a graded forum, or a group project. |
| Late Homework | Homework will be accepted up to one week late, but with a 10% reduction in points (unless excused), and instructor must be notified via Insight email after the late assignment is uploaded. I will allow only two late homework assignments from each student. Talk to me if you are having a problem with the schedule! There is usually a 2 day grace period; homework due on Friday is acceptable if turned in by Sunday night. |
| Midterm and Final Exams | Exams will be given within an 8-day period, and are timed. You must take the exam during the stated time frame. Check the schedule for dates that exams are available, and then visit the week's section in Insight to take it. The test results will be available to you immediately. Exams may not be taken late. |
