Note: Class will use Windows XP or 2000, not Vista.

What to do after you register

City College uses Moodle, a course management system for online courses.  Our version of Moodle is called INSIGHT.  After you register for this class, you should:

  1. Email the instructor (that's me, Nancy Webb) at nwebb@ccsf.edu with CNIT 102 ADD and your name on the subject line and some information about yourself.

  2. Make sure your correct email address is entered into WebSTARS.  I use an automatic program to gather email addresses from WebSTARS when I send out login instructions, as does Insight, which will send you an email with your Insight password.

  3. There is also an optional face to face orientation at the City College campus. See the link above.

Log in to our class at Insight

If you are officially pre-registered in the class, your password will be emailed to you just before the semester officially begins. (If you've taken an Insight class before, use your same password - a new one will not be emailed to you.)  Our class "meets" at this website:

http://insight.ccsf.edu

Your login name will be your CCSF student ID, with a lowercase letter.  If your ID begins with @, you'll have to use an x.

Class will be available by 10am on the first day classes begin for the semester.  You are required to log in at the above URL within 7 days of the start of class or you might be dropped.

If you add the class after pre-registration, then you will be able to login within 24 hours.  Log in as soon as possible.

If you do not log in to Insight every week, you might be dropped from class.

Are you ready for an online class?

Online courses provide students an opportunity to learn at home with a more relaxed schedule than a regular class.  However, you also should understand that online courses are not for everyone. To succeed, you have to be self-motivated, possess good study skills, and be an independent learner. Most students find that online courses are as challenging as on-campus courses.

First, take a short self evaluation to help you decide if online courses are right for you. Next, check to make sure you meet the minimum hardware and software requirements. When you're ready to enroll, follow the steps in "How to Enroll in an Online Course".

About CNIT 102

This course will help you learn all the most important topics about the Windows 2000 and XP Command Line to prepare you for the CompTIA A+ Operating Systems technologies exam, including working with files and directories, managing and backing up a hard disk, using troubleshooting tools, writing batch programs, the Windows 2000 Registry, and using network, TCP/IP, and FTP commands. This course assumes that you have already learned basic Windows navigation and file management skills from a Windows course.  Windows Vista command line is very similar to the Windows XP command line, but you'll need to use Windows XP or 2000 for this class.
