I'm a faculty member of the Health Education Department, and am active in the Women's Studies Department too. I came to teaching years ago from the experience of working at hospitals, clinics, and mental health centers in San Francisco, where I learned from the inside the politics of health. I was a biology major at Antioch College and earned my Masters in Health Science at SFSU, but I consider my foremost qualification to be my many years as a health activist. I've learned firsthand that the personal is political, so personal and political empowerment is a main goal of my classes. I take a holistic view of health, honoring the spiritual and emotional aspects as well as the physical. I've been very involved in issues of sexual health and helped create CCSF's HIV/STI Prevention Certificate Program, currently teaching the Hepatitis ABCs course. I created the Women's Health Issues course. I've gotten involved in Gerontology, teaching Health and Aging, and coordinating a grant on Elder Abuse Prevention. My personal interests include: Yoga, Qi Gong, gardening, rock music, reading, and clipping newspaper articles about health. |
