Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna) 15 June 2018 - Day, Modoc County, California, USA.
Singing male found 10 June 2018 by Logan Kahle and Calvin Lou. Song very different from Western Meadowlark (S.neglecta). Higher in pitched and much simpler "See-you See-yeer." With first pair low-high and final pair clearly high-low. Tonal quality very thin, reminiscent of Brown-headed Cowbird. In comparison with numerous Western Meadowlarks, this bird seemed brighter yellow below with broader black bib in middle of breast. Face pale gray with more contrasting black trans-ocular stripe. Yellow of throat forming a well defined strip from chin to black bib, not penetrating white malar. Black streaking on sides of breast extending narrowly down the flanks, better defined and cleaner than on Western Meadowlark. Upperparts decidedly darker than Western Meadowlark except for tail which seemed slightly paler when seen in flight. Legs marginally longer than Western Meadowlark when standing upright. Characters suggest a bird of the Eastern (magna) group, most likely nominate S. m. magna or S. m. argutula. Viewing was better early in the morning. Heat waves were a problem mid-day. Viewed and photographed from public road outside fence. Digiscoped with Panasonic LX5 | Nikon FS III | 30X fixed | no adapter. Calculated distance 150 meters using Google Earth. |
