I've digested it a bit more. I last thought it must be black-chinned sparrow, but now I'm warming up to Verdin. I looked at a photo (usually I try to do these without books, but not this one!). Sure enough, verdins have those fat blue vireo legs. The faint yellow walsh under the wings and undertail seemed a bit off for BCSP. At first I thought the bill seemed too big for verdin, but in a verdin photo I looked at, it looked about the same as this mystery bird. Plus the juvy verdin photo I looked at showed faint darkening on the top and bottom edge of the bill, which this bird also shows.
