Dave, I'm prepared to join you somewhere near the centerline. I experience Costa's about once every five years and live where only three spp. are regularly seen. I thought a Costa's ought to show indications of what would become a clearly extended gorget and show an obvious white area behind the gorget. The bird does look short-tailed, which I didn't notice before reading others' comments. The true bill length is uncertain due to posture. This bird shows me my lack of experience with hummers, but I can chalk it up honestly to few opportunities for repeated study to acquire familiarity. Perhaps this individual might have been considered to exhibit characteristics of both Costa's and Anna's.
