Requirements/Grading Criteria:

• Accurate representation of the ideas in the chapter.
• Completeness. Coverage of the important points in the chapter, including the main ideas of each of the subsections (set off every three to four pages by a space between paragraphs).  The suggested minimum to cover all the points is two pages.
• Conciseness. The summary paper must be a maximum of three pages, double-spaced in twelve-point font.
• Focused paragraphs. Each paragraph should have one topic sentence with related sub-points.
• A variety of transition words used to show the relationships between paragraphs and also between ideas within paragraphs.
• An introduction that mentions the author and title of the chapter summarized and includes a thesis which summarizes the chapter in one sentence.
• Your best Standard English, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and word choice.
• Of course, no plagiarism.  No four words in a row should be the same as in the book.
  

Hints:

• You may want to start by summarizing each section of the chapter in one paragraph and putting those paragraphs together in order.
• The summary can include an occasional quotation from the book if the wording in the quotation is especially important.  If you quote, include the page number in parentheses after the quotation.
• From time to time, use a phrase like “Kolbert claims…,” or “Kolbert describes…” to remind the reader that the ideas are hers.  Do this approximately once a paragraph as a rule of thumb.
• Do not analyze or give opinions or personal responses to the chapter.
• “Shishmaref, Alaska,” combines two kinds of nonfiction: narrative and exposition. Kolbert tells the story of her trip to Alaska and also presents a set of facts and arguments.  Your summary should give us a sense of the general outline of her trip(s) even as you focus on what she is trying to say more generally about climate change in the Arctic.
