Corrections Round Two

Anna Mills, Instructor

Corrections Instructions, Round Two
In round two, you will turn in a list of the errors you were not able to fix in round one and their corrections.  You will also fill in a log to help you keep track of your patterns of error.  You will turn in both the corrections and the log in the same folder with the graded essay. If you do not complete all aspects of the assignment according to instructions, you will not receive credit.  You must get credit for all three corrections assignments in full to pass the class. In addition, you will receive a grade on this assignment which will be factored into your grammar grade for the semester (10% of total grade).

Corrections:

  • You must correct all the errors that correspond to circled numbers.
  • The corrections will take the form of a typed, numbered list.
  • Use the Corrections Template available on the website.  Download it and add in your corrections.
  • For each error, copy the section number, look up the name of that type of error, and copy it as well.  Then copy the sentence with the error without correcting it
  • Next, type “Correction:” and then a corrected version of the sentence.
  • Next, type “Explanation:” and then explain in your own words what the error was and how you fixed it.
  • At the top of your essay, I have written the total number of corrections to complete.  The assignment is not complete until you have turned in a list with that number of corrections.

Sample Corrections:
1. Handbook section: 23b
Error name: Pronoun reference error
Sentence with the error: Each person who tries their best will succeed.
Correction:  Each person who tries his or her best will succeed.
Explanation: “Person” is singular and “their” is plural.

2. Handbook section: 57
Error: Prepositions:  I really got excited on the book.
Correction:   I really got excited about the book.
Explanation: “To get excited on” means to get excited on top of something, like a table.  I looked up “excited” and found that you get excited “about” a topic.

Error Log:

  • Download the Error Log Template (Word) (Rich Text Format) from the class website.  For each handbook section number found on your paper, fill out one row of the error log.  Count the number of times this error occurs in your paper and record this number in the appropriate column for the particular essay.
  • At the bottom, in the space provided, list your 3 top priority errors which you intend to proofread for on the next essay.
  • Make sure you save a copy of this error log so you can add to it and print it out again after the next essay. You will use the same error log for all papers so you can keep track of your improvement.
