Biography: BA, Art History, Wellesley College; MA, PhD, Art History, University of Kansas. I have taught at City College of San Francisco since 1995. I am also curator of a private collection of modern Chinese art in San Francisco. I grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania, and gradually moved west, landing in California in 1991. I love to travel, both within the US and to other countries, especially to see art of all kinds.

Course Description: Western (Ancient) Art


WESTERN (ANCIENT) ART (Art 101) is a survey of Western (Ancient) Art from 35,000 BCE to 1200 CE: Paleolithic art through the Byzantine period. Art will be discussed from critical and historical perspectives, with regard to formal visual elements of style and the social context of the societies, values, and ideas that gave birth to Western art.

Prerequisite(s): There are no prerequisites for this course.

Major Learning Outcomes


When the student has completed the course, s/he will be able to:

  1. Distinguish and analyze the variety of techniques and formal visual elements of individual works of art in different media.
  2. Define and differentiate the various styles within Ancient Art.
  3. Evaluate works of art in relation to the context and historical background in which they were created.
  4. Summarize the concepts that define and distinguish Ancient Art, and assess its influence on subsequent artistic periods.
  5. Examine and appraise works of art for formal elements and content, and demonstrate the ability to compare and contrast stylistic elements that distinguish aesthetic and cultural trends.

Expanded Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify formal visual elements of design.
  2. Evaluate works of art applying the visual elements of design in a descriptive analysis of art works.
  3. Apply art historical terminology in a descriptive analysis of Ancient Art.
  4. Distinguish the variety of techniques used in different periods of Ancient Art.
  5. Compare and contrast stylistic differences between works of art from various ancient cultures.
  6. Recognize different styles and major movements in Ancient Art.
  7. Recognize pivotal works of major artists in the ancient world.
  8. Examine works of art and place them within their respective historical contexts.

  2. Articles and other materials accessed through links in the course
  3. Discussion forums
  4. Periodic quizzes
  5. Descriptive analysis paper (3-5 pages)
  6. Research paper (7-10 pages) or Honors paper (15-20 pages)

Optional Field Trip


This will be an optional meeting at the Legion of Honor Museum, located in Lincoln Park, 34th Avenue at Clement, San Francisco, for assistance from me on the first paper. See the museum's Web site for general information on hours and programs.
