Šipan is the largest of the Elafiti chain of a dozen islands in the vicinity of Dubrovnik, Croatia. In an area of only 16 square kilometers, the island has a wealth of natural resources and beautiful sights. Once a summer resort site for the nobility of Dubrovnik, Šipan has a rich history, which can be seen in examples of architecture from the Renaissance and Middle Ages as well as ruins from Greek and Roman times. Over the centuries, olive orchards and vineyards have been the mainstay of the local economy. Today, Šipan is an agricultural and fishing community that still produces some of the finest olive oil in the world and also offers comfortable accommodations for visitors who enjoy a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere, fine food, natural beauty, and the pleasures of the Adriatic. There are two main villages on the island, Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ. Šipanska Luka, the larger of the two, has about 250 year-round residents, two stores, a vegetable market, three restaurants, two cafes, a hotel, and a post office. The smaller village, Suđurađ, is 5 km. southeast of Luka, on the opposite end of the island. It is better developed agriculturally and has a population of about 200 residents, a store, a vegetable market, some nice cafes, a small hotel and 3 beautiful Renaissance villas. Despite the barrage of summer tourists, Šipan has remained a very laid-back and quiet place where the tempo of life has changed very little over the centuries. |
