Background

Dr. Chang teaches courses in engineering and energy at CCSF. She is also the faculty advisor of our newly launched Society of Women Engineers (SWE) City College of San Francisco Affiliate, led by a group of dynamic women engineering students. We strive to create a nurturing community for women engineering students by providing personalized mentorship, connections to industry, tours of industrial and municipal engineering facilities, and professional workshops.

Prior to CCSF, Dr. Chang taught engineering and physics courses at UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University, St. Mary’s College, and University of Calgary in Canada. She is particularly dedicated to supporting student learning beyond the classroom, assisting in the launch of the SFSU Chapter of Engineers Without Borders and SWE at University of Calgary. Using design thinking as the basis, she created a class on social entrepreneurship by leveraging extensive partnerships with people outside the academic community, resulting in student projects that continued beyond the class. The class was covered by CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) in both English and French, as well as via airtime on Global News. Her goal in life is to empower the next generation of changemakers!

With interest in applied science, Dr. Chang worked in the implementation of environmental policy both domestically and internationally. At the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, she was a part of the team that enforced the Clean Water Act for Region 9, for which she participated in inspections of industrial and municipal facilities and liased with state-level officials. Internationally, she consulted with the World Bank on issues such as climate change, marine conservation, energy efficiency, and wastewater pollution with the governments of Tanzania, Kenya, India, and Croatia. Additionally, she provided support to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Education for Sustainable Development.
