Art 103 catalogue description:
”The origins and developments of Modern Art in Europe and America from the French Revolution through World War II. Artworks will be analyzed from both critical and historical perspectives. Students will examine the formal/thematic characteristics of styles and periods of modernism. Also under examination are the larger social/cultural contexts for the art movements under study.”
Professor and course's Objectives
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
- Classify movements and styles of European and American Modern art from late 18th century to pre-WWII
- Gain visual literacy in order to analyze individual works of art from both a formal and conceptual point of view
- Identify and appreciate the symbols, visual effects and processes that contribute to a work of art’s meaning and historical value
- Know about the historical and philosophical factors that led to these artistic movements’ emergence and development
- Comprehend how the creation of Modern art stems from the artist’s personal vision
- Comprehend how Modern art is a cultural artifact that reflects our societies’ values and power struggles.
- Use and appreciate the Modern Western cultural patrimony/matrimony (?)
