Course Description

CCSF Study Abroad Program

Explore the natural wonders of Australia with City College of San Francisco this summer. Study the ecology and natural history of the Great Barrier Reef and the tropical rainforests of northern Australia where you'll find plants and animals unique to the island continent. Participants will earn three units of college transferable credit in an introductory ecology course (Bio 20) while exploring Australia's premier wilderness regions. Trip costs are approximately $3200 which includes all air travel and guided tours, plus shared accomodations and most of your meals.

Course Description

The course itinerary will focus on the diversity of ecosystems representative of Australia. • Our first stop will be Sydney where you'll be introduced to the historical development of an international cultural center. • Next we'll study marine ecology at the Great Barrier Reef and experience the greatest diversity of marine life in the world. • Returning to shore we'll explore the evolution and unique biology of the platypus, marsupials, and other rainforest wildlife at the Atherton Tablelands, home to Australia's greatest concentration of endangered species. • Next a custom off-road vehicle will take us to Jowalbinna where you'll camp among ancient Aboriginal rock art and learn about the conservation ethic of the world's oldest surviving culture. • Then at the wetlands and billabongs (waterholes) of Lakefield you'll investigate the management and control of two species of crocodiles. • Our last destination is the world's oldest rainforest at Cape Tribulation where you'll examine the recent political movement for its preservation.

Course Format

All instructional programs in Australia will be conducted outdoors in national parks and wilderness areas. Field assignments will include guided tours by motorcoach and custom off-road vehicle, glass-bottom boat cruises, optional snorkeling. leisurely hikes, birdwatching, evening campfires, and spotlighting for nocturnal wildlife. The total number of different species previously observed in 1999 included 10 marsupials, 2 monotremes, 8 reptiles, and 95 birds. Throughout the course, the environmental problems facing Australia will provide you with a framework for seeking solutions to global ecological issues. The trip itinerary is designed to include ample free time for relaxation and independent exploration.

Meals and Accomodations

The program price includes all breakfasts, and most lunches and dinners during the course -- except in Sydney, Cairns, and Fitzroy Island where a wide selection of inexpensive meals are available for purchase. Accomodations generally consist of twin occupancy in standard quality hotels or motels with private bath. The accomodations at Fitzroy Island and Jowalbinna consists of dormitories or tent cabins with shared bath.

Enrollment and Tuition

Students will earn three semester units of transferable college credit from City College of San Francisco, a nationally accredited U.S. community college. A $11 per unit enrollment fee ($141 for non-California residents) must be paid upon registration. An official transcript for the completed coursework will be provided upon request.

Instructors

The course instructor is Calvin Hom who has lead two previous study-adventure programs to Australia, the most recent in 1999. An instructor at CCSF since 1985, he is presently teaching zoology, oceanography, and human biology. Assisting him during the trip will be a local Australian tour guide trained in natural history and experienced in leading travel programs for college students.

Trip Highlights with Photos

Two options are available for viewing snapshots taken from previous travel programs in Australia -- both of which require a 56K modem at a minimum.

(1) Minimum 56K modems - Thumbnail photos from the itinerary are available for viewing, with the option to select photos to enlarge to full-size. Each of the eight sets of 11-20 thumbnails may take a minute or more to load with a 56K modem.

(2) Higher-speed connections (e.g. cable modem, DSL, T1) - The full-size photos can also be viewed as four slideshows composed of 15-24 images (Netscape 4.5 or Internet Explorer 5.0 required, Powerpoint program not required). This is not recommended for slower modems as a single photo may take over a minute to load.

Sydney

The course will begin with a two-day orientation in Sydney, the population center of Australia. A guided tour of Sydney Harbour by foot and ferry will retrace the history of British exploration, convict settlement, and urban expansion.

Great Barrier Reef

view photos

A short flight will take us to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living entity and the only biological structure visible from space. Settling at Fitzroy Island as our base, we'll explore mangrove trees and snorkel (all equipment provided) nearshore in a fringing coral reef. The highlight of our exploration is a high-catamaran trip to Moore Reef to snorkel in an outer coral reef with its unbelievable diversity of marine life.

Tropical Rainforest

view photos

Returning to the mainland, we'll travel to the rainforests and waterfalls of the Atherton Tablelands, home to the greatest concentration of endangered Australian species. Field excursions will include morning sightings of the platypus, birdwatching kookaburras and cockatoos, late-night spotlighting for nocturnal marsupials, and numerous waterfalls.

The Bush

At the edge of the rainforest, we'll venture into the arid shrublands of the outback that comprises most of Australia's interior. There we'll encouter giant termite mounds, grey kangaroos at Mareeba, flying-foxes (fruit bats) at Tolga Scrub, and perhaps a dingo, the wild dogs of the Aborigines.

Aboriginal Rock Art

The Oka, a custom off-road vehicle, will next take us northward to Jowalbinna in the Quinkin Aboriginal Reserve where we'll camp among one of the finest galleries of rock art and learn about their Aboriginal creators.

Wetlands and Billabongs

view photos

Nearby at Lakefield we'll search the streams and billabongs (water holes) for freshwater and estuarine crocodiles, as well as goannas (giant lizards).

Coastal Rainforest

Returning to the coast brings us to Cape Tribulation where the Daintree rainforest has recently been protected from logging. Here you'll learn about the conservation ethic of the Aborigines and have breakfast among the birds at a wildlife sanctuary. Returning to Cairns you can catch a flight home via Sydney or continue with your personal travel plans.

Accommodations
