English 90 Expectations upon Entrance

Classroom Etiquette

A student should always

  • attend class regularly and be on time.
  • be aware of and follow the instructor's attendance and behavior policies.
  • allot the time for and commit to the one hour of lab required each week in the Learning Assistance Center.
  • always bring the appropriate materials to class: books, paper, pens, and pencils, etc.
  • expect to turn in all assignments on time, at the beginning of a class period.
  • can only turn in his/her own, original work. Work that is copied without proper citation will be considered plagiarized.

Writing Skills

At the beginning of English 90 a student should

  • understand the difference between a paragraph and an essay.
  • understand the difference between a thesis and a topic sentence.
  • expect to regularly rewrite his/her work and create multiple drafts of writing assignments.
  • be able to identify the difference between a noun and a verb.
  • be able to distinguish between the fundamental verb tenses.
  • read using a dictionary and a thesaurus to clarify meanings and usage.
  • be ready to word-process outside writing assignments based upon an instructor's requirements. This includes following the English Department's manuscript guidelines which follow the current M.L.A. format and citation system.

Reading Skills

At the beginning of English 90 a student should

  • have a minimum score of 16 on the RFU 3 test.
  • be able to undertake longer outside reading projects including essays of more than five pages or novels and non-fiction books as assigned by the instructor.
  • read actively. This means generating questions and comments as s/he reads.
  • read using a dictionary and a thesaurus to clarify meanings and usage.
