Curriculum

The English Department brought a recommendation to the Academic Senate to have our graduation requirement moved to English 96 for all students. Likewise, we asked the Senate to approve the new CSU transfer requirement of 1A for all transfer students.

Both recommendations were passed and will now head to Bipartite for final confirmation. Should that happen, the new requirements could be in place for next fall's entering class of students. Currently enrolled students will fall under the previous grad requirements due to catalog rights.

From Dean Bruce Smith

The College is applying for a grant from the Carnegie Foundation to help us develop our reading program including funds to support training composition faculty who want to develop their ability to teach read courses and support reading instruction in their composition courses.

This semester, for the first time, a proportion of the limited number of additional sections added to the spring schedule to meet student demand were specifically dedicated to providing more student access to English classes. We have added 13 sections to the English Department offerings in the reading and composition sequence for the spring semester.

Spring 2005--Good News!

According to English Department Chair John Batty-Sylvan, six fulltime composition positions and one fulltime Speech position have been approved. Interviews for these tenure-track openings shall take place during the Spring 2005 semester.

Assignments

The Spring 2005 course assignments have also been completed. Please check your campus mailbox for your assignment and book order forms.

Free Books

The Allyn/Bacon/Longman representative left copies of texts in our book closet outside L514; if you missed his display, step into our closet. Joan or John has the key.

Reading

Louise Nayer is giving a reading at Bird and Beckett Bookstore on Nov. 7 at 11 A.M.. Bookstore is located at 2788 Diamond Street. Her reading is from her memoir in progress called Flash Fire.

Drama

Daniel Curzon-Brown's one act play A Fool's Audition is now available from Baker's Plays (see Fall Catalogue, 2004). Daniel has also been invited to appear as a playwright at the April 2005 Jack London Writers Conference.

Cyberia

Jim Sauve assesses the upgraded operating system and new writing software in Cyberia, our Art Extension 265 computerized classroom and lab. Open lab is Monday-Friday 1-4 and Saturday 10-1. Bring in your students or have them stop by to use the writing software, grammar and punctuation diagnostic test, writing exercises, and reading programs. Students may also receive 20-25 minutes of tutoring and use the Internet composition resources linked to The Lab Page, where you'll find valuable Writing and Reading Lab information.

Students make use of Cyberia on a Saturday. According to one of Susan Zimmerman's English 90 students, top right, "The computer alternatives are cool, especially Exercise Central."

Special thanks to Chris Greger and Jim Sauve for assembling Cyberia's seven new chairs. Buildings and Ground is very selective about the furniture they will assemble. Thanks also to Nadine Rosenthal and Bruce Smith for their help with purchasing these chairs. And thanks to some good old Yankee ingenuity and Duck Tape, Craig Kleinman (yhlb) also repaired the broken chairs; B&G does not repair furniture.

Elizabeth Dewar-Kudsi would like to offer few words about next week's election: "Kerry goo . . . Bush ba . . . . Go Sox!"

Lab Hours and Open House

Students are using Cyberia, the Writing Lab, and Reading Lab 10-20% more than they were at this time last semester. Thank you for doing more to integrate classroom and lab practices. To build even more on this lab renaissance, Jim Sauve and Craig Kleinman will be hosting an open house in Cyberia (Art Ext 265) on Monday, 11/8, from 1:30-2:30 to show faculty the range of resources available there for teachers and students: composition software, diagnostics, grammar activities. . . . Please try to attend; it may have a wonderful impact on how you design your courses for next semester and how your students learn outside of your classroom. If you cannot attend, please stop by during open lab hours (listed above).

Batmale Hall has been incorporated into a student tribute to Rick James, the late Super Freak. Portions of this memorial have been paid for by a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission. A similar memorial can be found behind the dumpster on the northeast corner of 6^th and Folsom.
