Programming Lab 7: Crystal Reports, due Thursday, 12/7
Objective: To use VB and Crystal Reports to produce a report of Customers grouped by State
Here are the details and rules:
- Beware that, according to one student, the student version of VS.NET doesn't come with Crystal
Reports. If you don't have Crystal Reports, I recommend that you to do this assignment in the ACRC
Lab (3rd floor Batmale Hall). If you can't make it there, my only other suggestion is to try the Crystal Reports web site, where
you can download a free 30-day trial version. (It may be a different version of Crystal Reports than
we're using. The one I demo'd in class is the one that came with Visual Studio.NET 2003 - I couldn't find
a version number.)
- Write a program to display a report of Customers grouped by State like shown here. (Top and bottom of
first page shown here):
- Use a DataAdapter control from the toolbar, and generate a Typed DataSet from it.
- To setup the update commands for your DataAdapter, use whichever method you prefer.
- Follow the directions given in the notes on Crystal Reports.
- Use the Standard Report Expert for your report, and include the fields shown in the above image.
Group the records by State, and Total them by State (count).
- After the expert is done, you'll have to manually edit your report to move the State column and its
header to the far right side. Also, Add the title in the Page Header. Make sure your report looks
just like mine shown above.
- When turning in your homework, turn in a zip file containing your entire solution.
- For 5% Extra Credit add the Order table to your DataSet and report, so that the report shows
the orders made by each customer (grouped by customer). Hint: There is a huge amount of data in these
tables, so you'll probably have to limit your query to only report on some of the data (just make sure to
show enough to demonstrate that your program works).
