COURSE DESCRIPTION AND POLICIES

ART 130A. Basic Drawing

Units: 3
Prerequisite: None, however completion/concurrent enrollment in ART 125A is highly recommended
Repeat: max. 6 units

Location: Castro Everette Campus at Everette Middle School, 450 Church Streetl

Time: Every Wednesday (MANDATORY) 6:30 - 9:30pm


A course in the theory and practice of drawing using a systematic variety of media and subject matter. The student will examine drawing through the graphic elements of line, plane, tone, shape, form, volume, rendering, and perspective. The course includes an introduction to light and shadow. Beginning problems will be structured to guide the student and the instructor will assist in this experience through individual attention. Instruction leads to direct the student and encourage subjective self-expression. CSU/UC/CAN ART 8

Course Goals:

  • Learn the concepts and principles of drawing.
  • Develop an appreciation for drawing.
  • Learn the vocabulary of art.
  • Develop critical verbal skills.
  • Learn a variety of drawing techniques.
  • Discover content possibilities.
  • Develop skill with a wide variety of materials.

Procedure:

ONLINE: presentation of readings, viewing images from a wide variety of artist, drawing assignments and online topic discussion postings.

FACE TO FACE: Every Wednesday evening meet in class to critique drawing assignments, work one on one while drawing.

FIELD TRIP: There may be one voluntary field trip.

EVALUATION: Portfolio of work done in class will be due at mid term and for final along with attendance, craftsmanship and effort.

Attendance:

Attendance to the weekly mandatory Wednesday meetings is MANDATORY. One absences will not affect your final grade. Two absences will lower your final grade by one letter. Three absences will lower your final grade by two letters. Being more than 15 minutes late or leaving class early will constitute one absence. Your are also required to sign into the online web site each week.

Policies:

All Tasks and Assignments given in the classroom and online must be completed on the due dates. Late work will be accepted without penalty only with an an excused absence up to one week after the due date. Assignments later than one week will be marked down. Participation in class critiques is required. Craftsmanship is critical. Clean up after class is required. Prompt and full attendance is required. Textbook and materials are required.
