Content: Intermediate Drawing is the opportunity to take what you’ve learned in Basic Drawing and go further in depth with the addition of the study of color. It’s also the time to experiment with your knowledge and discover how to teach yourself to keep drawing.
Goals and Objectives: My goals will be to expand your use of materials and creative thinking. I will revisit value, space and critical thinking while also introducing the theory and use of color. You will also be looking at issues in historical and contemporary drawing to better understand the possibilities of drawing.
Method: Concepts will be introduced through handouts, lectures, books, slides and viewing drawings. Projects will be designed to aid in understanding the concepts. Demonstrations will be given to introduce materials and techniques. I will speak to you individually and we will have frequent group critiques. You will have an outside project to work on that will be due at intervals during the semester. There will be at least one field trip.
Materials: The understanding and exploration of various drawing tools are an essential part of this course. You must have the required supplies, please refer to the materials list and your week to week schedule. A suggested textbook “Drawing, a Contemporary Approach,” by Betti and Salle, can be purchased new or used at bookstores.
Expectations: Learning to draw comes from collecting information from me, taking notes, looking at drawings, from watching and talking to your classmates and many, many, many hours of drawing. For these reasons full (and punctual) class time attendance is mandatory. I will repeat lectures and assignments only in cases excused absences, otherwise you are each responsible for staying informed through your classmates. Assignments will be reviewed in group classroom critiques making it essential to have completed work done on time. Late and make-up assignments will be accepted if handled ASAP. Materials are essential in this course; you must have the required supplies.
Attendance: Promptness and use of the entire class period are essential and required. Coming into class more than 15 minutes late or leaving class early will constitute an absence. Absences will adversely affect you grade: 1-3, no effect; 4-6 will drop your final grade one letter; 7-9, two letters; more than 9, I advise dropping the class.
Grading: Grading is done by assessing class performance, class projects and attendance. Talent is not the basis for a high grade and does not guarantee a high grade. Midterm and final portfolios will be reviewed. They will contain a collection of your work done over the semester so save all your work, do not throw away anything until the end of the class.
