I am so glad to know that you are interested in learning Chinese online. My name is Joyce Liou, and I will be your instructor for online Chinese 1Acourses. After you officially register for the online Chinese class, please send me an email with the following information and format:

  1. What is the prerequisite for Chinese 1A?

Completion of Eng 94 or higher or ESL 82 or higher or completion of any City College or university foreign language course is required for or all Chinese online course.

  2. Do I have to attend the orientation?

The orientation is REQUIRED. We will meet each other in-person and have a hands-on experience with WebCT, the course management software. The orientation for Chinese 1A :

   4. Will all my assignments be done on the computer?

No, Chinese 1A students will do part of your assignments online, and hand written part of your assignments in the workbook which includes the Chinese character exercises and pinyin exercises. Each paper that you submit must have your name on it. The hand written assignments must be stapled together. These written assignments must be sent to me every other week in one of the following ways:

·        Drop your assignment off in person.  Go to the Language Center in The Rosenberg Library (Room R205). Please make sure that your assignment is in an envelope.

   5. Is there any special software and hardware I may need for this course?

    • Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher is recommended. Netscape is not recommended because it will not read Chinese characters.
    • Minimum requirement is Windows 2000 or above is recommended. 
    • Chinese language package for windows .
    • Adobe Acrabat
    • NJStar word processor or MS word
    • Modem speed: 56K and up
    • You need at least 32 MB RAM
    • Microphone and speaker or headset

     6. What textbook and materials do I need to purchase?

·        The textbook for  Elementary Chinese 1A is: Chinese Links (Elementary Chinese);

     7. What is the best way to contact you?
