Red-browed Firetail (Neochmia temporalis temporalis) 17 July 2014. Emu Plains, NSW, Australia
![]() These little finches (formerly called Red-browed Finches) were common throughout eastern Australia. They are endemic to the area, although they have been introduced to Tahiti and a few other places. I've seen them before for sale in pet shops, so it was nice to be able to enjoy them in their native land. These birds are in the subfamily, Poephilinae of the Estrildidae which include Waxbills, Grass Finches, and Munias.
