Here the juvenile is being fed by a female, not necessarily its parent. As Acorn Woodpeckers are cooperative breeders and practice polygynandry. There are joint nesting females who are all related to each other and cobreeding males who are also related to each other but not related to the joint nesting females. This juvenile Acorn Woodpecker is waiting to get fed. Both sexes have red on the top of the head, but juveniles have dark eyes, while adults usually have white eyes. The birds in California are the large race M. f. bairdi and usually are more heavily marked on the chest than other races. Panasonic DMC-LZ5 / Nikon FS 3 / 30XWA / hand-held, no adapter. |
