Common Miner (Geositta cunicularia cunicularia) 5 February 2015. Camino Dinamarquero-Ciake, Magallanes, Chile.
South American Miners build their nests by excavating tunnels in the earth. They are in the Furnariidae (Ovenbirds and Woodcreepers), not to be confused with Meliphagidae (Honeyeaters) of Australasia some of which are also called "Miners." The Common Miner has nine subspecies nominally arranged into five groups, some of which probably deserve to be recognized as full species. This individual is of the nominate race, part of the migratory Cunicularia group which breeds in the Patagonian steppe. This subspecies is characterized by medium chest streaking and faint malar stripe. Its song is reportedly different from highland races. Nikon P510 point-and-shoot |
