Correndera Pipit (Anthus correndera chilensis) 2 February 2015. Sector el Melipal, El Blanco, Aisén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, Chile.

This is a widespread resident throughout southern South America where it prefers grassland habitat. In appearance and behavior it reminds me of the North American Sprague's Pipit (Anthus spragueii) which is slightly smaller and more finely patterned. Neither species seems to pump its tail like other pipits. Five subspecies are usually recognized. This is A. c. chilensis which ranges through the southern end of South America. It is darker and more buffy than other races. It is further characterized by more extensive, but less dense streaking on its underparts as well as less white in its tail. The outermost tail feather (r6) is all white but r5 is dark except for the white shaft. This distinctive pattern is visible in the top photo as are the pale mantle stripes.
