Guira Cuckoo (Guira guira) 18 February 2015. Ceibas, Entre Ríos, Argentina
The name Guira is from its Güaraní name. Unlike their Old World cousins, these cuckoos are non-parasitic. The Guira is the sole representative of its genus, but its behavior is similar to the Anis (Crotophaga). Like the Anis, Guira Cuckoo is a cooperative breeder in which multiple females lay in the same nest. Both are included in the small subfamily Crotophaginae, but Guira is the most divergent of the group. These are relatively shaggy looking individuals.
