Kelp Goose (Chloephaga hybrida hybrida) 3 February 2015. Chilean Fjords, Aisén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, Chile.
![]() ![]() This is a strictly coastal species. Unlike most true geese, these "sheldgeese" (genus Chloephaga) usually show considerable sexual dimorphism. Here the male is pure white, while the female is very dark with white restricted to the inner wing and lower belly. When we saw them foraging along rocky shorelines, we could easily pick out the white males from a great distance, while the females were almost impossible to detect against the dark background. Unlike other sheldgeese, we never encountered these birds in flocks. Instead they were invariably in pairs. Two subspecies are recognized. This is the nominate race found on the mainland, while a larger race is restricted to the Falkland Islands. Nikon P510 Point and Shoot |
