Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus monachus) 16 February 2015. Jardin Botanico, Montevideo, Uruguay

These were the most common Parakeets in the area. This species has been introduced in Eastern North America where steps have been taken to eradicate them in some areas where they threaten agriculture. It has also become established locally in parts of Europe. In the pet trade, this species is known as the Quaker Parakeet and is said to be easy to train to talk. This is the large widespread nominate race. Other races are smaller. The race M. m. luchsi from Bolivia is split as a separate species (Cliff Parakeet) by HBW using the Tobias scoring system in which the differences add up to a score of 9 (7 needed for splitting under this system). However two SACC proposals to split Cliff Parakeet (M. m. luchsi) failed.
