Red-gartered Coot (Fulica armillata) 17 February 2015. Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur, Buenos Aires, Argentina
This was the larger and more common of the two species of coots at the reserve; easily identified by its yellow bill separated from its white frontal shield by red. It ranges widely in fresh water throughout southern South America. Most coots feed on aquatic vegetation but, in some areas this species specializes on small grapsid crabs (Cyrtograpsus angulatus).
