Streaked Flycatcher (Myiodynastes maculatus solitarius) 18 February 2015. Ceibas, Entre Ríos, Argentina

This species is similar to the Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher (Myiodynastes luteiventris) but differs in the amount of black on its chin (none in Streaked) and color of its underparts (paler on Streaked) and supercilium. Streaked Flycatcher averages a somewhat heavier bill but the proposed difference in the color of the base of the bill is unreliable. Flycatchers in this genus are unusual in their habit of nesting in tree cavities. Seven subspecies are recognized. This is the southernmost race M. m. solitarius which migrates into northern South America where it overlaps other races during the Austral winter. It is distinctive, having black, not brown dorsal streaks and much less rufous in its wings and tail. In the past, some authors have considered it to be a full species.
