Australasian Figbird (Sphecotheres vieilloti flaviventris) 25 July 2014. Wongaling Beach, QLD, Australia

This female was part of a much larger flock which roosted near our lodge each evening. Unlike other Old World Orioles (Oriolidae), this species is highly gregarious, particularly during the non-breeding season. Males differ markedly among subspecies, but females are all streaky brown. This species was formerly lumped with the Wetar and Green Figbirds under the simple name "Figbird." Clements used the English name "Southern Figbird" until splitting the Green and Yellow Figbirds in the 5th edition, but then lumping them again under the name Australasian Figbird in the 6th (current) edition.
