Australian Bustard (Ardeotis australis) 27 July 2014. Maryfarms, Mt. Carbine, QLD, Australia

Australia's heaviest flying land-bird posed briefly before strutting off and disappearing into the tall grass. They prefer to walk with long strides instead of flying. This is the only species of bustard found in Australia. It closely resembles the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) of India and Pakistan. Both are said to form a superspecies with Kori Bustard (Ardeotis kori) of Africa. In the past they all were classified in the genus Choriotis, but Ardeotis has priority. Bustards were formerly included with the Cranes in the order Gruiformes. However, following Hacket et al. (2008), Clements and IOC place them in their own order (Otidiformes) and in the their own family (Otididae).
