Forest Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii incinctus) 26 July 2014. Hasties Swamp, QLD, Australia.

Older references place this species in the Genus _Halcyon_, but more recent checklists put it in Todiramphus. Australian kingfishers seemed to be either very large (kookaburras) or very small like this bird. We didn't see anything that was medium sized like North America's Belted Kingfisher. Also most species in Australia did not seem particularly adapted to fishing; rather they ate insects, lizards, etc in terrestrial habitats. This is the eastern subspecies incincta which is said to be more turquoise (less blue) on the back than the nominate subspecies found in the Darwin region. I believe this individual is an adult male. Adult females lack the white band extending around the back of the neck and immatures have more buffy flanks. This individual was posed just outside the observation blind; too close for the best composition.
