Helmeted Friarbird (Philemon buceroides yorki) 28 July 2014. Mossman Gorge, QLD, Australia
![]() Friarbirds are bizarre looking honeyeaters with bare skin on their heads. This species is quite large (the largest in Australia) and ungainly; it frequently chased other birds away from foraging sites. This is the subspecies P. b. yorki from the Cape York Peninsula and coastal north-eastern Queensland. It is sometimes (e.g. IOC) considered a full species, the Cape York Friarbird or Hornbill Friarbird (Philemon yorki). However this split has not been accepted by Clements since its 1st edition, nor by eBird. The English name Helmeted Friarbird is now restricted to P. buceroides of NT in our Pizzy & Knight digital field guide. The two proposed species differ in the shape of the knob on the top of the bill which is larger in P. b. yorki. P. b. yorki also has a paler, whitish nape. Nikon P510 Coolpix Point & Shoot |
