Little Pied Cormorant (Phalacrocorax melanoleucos melanoleucos) 22 July 2014. Cheetham Wetlands, Avalon, VIC, Australia

This is an adult showing a bit of a breeding crest. Immatures lack the white above the eye. This was the most common cormorant in Australia in both fresh and salt water habitats. Some authors (e.g. IOC which has been adopted in Australia) place this species along with three other small cormorants in the genus "Microcarbo." However, Clements and most other authorities retain it with the other Cormorants in Phalacrocorax.
