Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua) 5 August 2014. Sydney Botanic Garden, Sydney, NSW, Australia

This largest Australian owl was our target bird of the day. The species is endemic to eastern Australia. Special thanks to the expert eyes of Tony Palliser who located this cryptic species hiding in the canopy of a large tree. Fortunately we also had help from the sales clerk at the gift shop and from one of the groundskeepers. These owls are evidently well known to the garden employees. This is an adult. Juveniles are largely white. Males and females are similar, but females are larger. The IOC called this species "Powerful Boobook" until changing to Powerful Owl in v2.10.
