Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus moluccanus) 17 July 2014. Emu Plains, NSW, Australia

These colorful parakeets are common throughout Eastern Australia, particularly in settled areas. Taxonomy varies. IOC considers this bird to be a separate species: Trichoglossus moluccanus. However, Clements, eBird and HBW take a more traditional approach and consider it to be a race of Trichoglossus haematodus which includes the Coconut, Sunset, Marigold, Biak, Leaf and Red-collared Lorikeets all of which have been split by IOC.
