Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) 2 August 2014. Kakadu National Park - Yellow Water, NT, Australia

This species is the largest of all living reptiles with males occasionally reaching over 20 feet in length. I judged this one to be about 10-12 feet, but it's hard to tell. After due consideration, I decided not to measure it. They are said to have the strongest bite of any animal, easily capable of crushing the skulls of large mammals. They also fearlessly defends their territories and will attack humans. In fact Australia averages about two documented fatalities from Crocodile attacks per year

This species ranges from India through Australasia and contrary to its name, it does well in both freshwater and saltwater. Another species, the Freshwater Crocodile (C. johnsoni) occurs in the same area, but usually avoids areas inhabited by Saltwater Crocodiles. Unfortunately, Freshwater Crocodile has declined precipitously with the introduction of the Cane Toad (Rhinella marina) which is poisonous to Freshwater Crocodile, but not to the larger Saltwater Croc.
