Torresian Crow (Corvus orru ceciliae) 3 August 2014. Jabiru, NT, Australia

This bird is scavenging a large fish head, probably dropped by a White-bellied Sea-Eagle along a roadside some distance from the lake. It is the same fish head seen in a video of battling Whistling Kites. Although difficult to distinguish from several other Australian Corvids, the Torresian Crow is the only member of the group found across tropical northern Australia. It habitually shuffles its wings upon landing. The light eye indicates this is an adult. Three subspecies are usually recognized with Australian birds assigned to C. o. ceciliae which has less violet gloss and slightly longer tail cf. other subspecies in New Guinea and Tanimbar. A fourth subspecies C. o. insularis from the Bismarck Archipelago is now recognized as a separate species, Bismarck Crow (C. insularis).
