Bare-faced Curassow (Crax fasciolata fasciolata) 8 August 2015. Rio Cristalino, Mato Grosso, BR

This individual was unusually tame. As I tried to photograph it through my spotting scope, it walked right up to me apparently oblivious to my presence. This is a female. Males are black with a white vent. This is the nominate race found through much of Brazil. Two other smaller races are usually recognized but C. f. pinima of NE Brazil was split as Belem Curassow (Crax pinima) by HBW and Birdlife International based on Tobias scoring. It gets a score of 7 which puts it just over the line as a separate species: The race C. f. grayi of eastern Bolivia is smaller and darker.
