Northern Woodland Racer (Drymoluber dichrous) 6 August 2015. Rio Cristalino, Mato Grosso, BR
![]() ![]() There has been some controversy about the identification of this snake. Originally I thought it might be a Green Palm Snake (Bothriechis lateralis) but later I thought P. olfersii seemed to be a better match. The black mask around the eye is a key feature, although variable and reduced in this individual. Philodryas snakes are usually considered non-poisonous, but P. olfersii is a venomous exception. More recently it has been suggested that this is actually a Northern Woodland Racer (Drymoluber dichrous). I asked our guide, Rich Hoyer about D. dichrous, and he said "That looks much more like our snake! Philodryas has a much more muscular (glandular) head." Corrections or contrary opinions are welcome.
