Savanna Hawk (Buteogallus meridionalis) 1 August 2015. BR-251 SE of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, BR
![]() One of several raptors attracted to an active roadside grass fire. This is an adult. Immatures are duller with a stronger head patter. This species was formerly placed in the monotypic genus Heterospizias because of its unusually long legs and wings, and distinctive plumage. However, genetic analysis has confirmed its position within a revised Buteogallus (SACC Proposal 492). Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter) |
