Yacare Caiman (Caiman yacare) 11 August 2015. Pantanal--P. Jofre boat on Rio Cuiabá & tributaries, Mato Grosso, BR

These large freshwater members of the Alligator family (Alligatoridae) are now abundant in the Pantanal where an estimated 10 million individuals comprise one of the world's largest crocodilian population having largely recovered from over hunting in the past (Wikipedia). The systematics of Caimans is complex and remains unresolved. There are apparently no diagnostic differences between C. yacare and C. crocodilus, the Spectacled Caiman which replaces it to the north. The two forms are considered subspecies by some authorities. This species is sometimes called the Paraguayan Caiman.
